2019 esCarpade Day 5 - Mount Gambier to Keith to Renmark

Day 5 had arrived, and the boys woke up in Mount Gambier...  Retro Rock-It was nice and clean from the bath yesterday.

Breakfast was at the Information Centre, which conveniently had a tallship on display!

A delicious breakfast was provided by the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes, who also donated the entire fee for providing breakfast back to Camp Quality!

Lined up on the grass... it will never be the same!

This nice old digger turned up to check out our cars... however we all ended up checking out HIS car!

Ben giving the Day 5 driver briefing...

Angus and Damian decided to do the bitumen today as Damian needed to stay in mobile phone range due to a family issue back in Queensland.  As a bonus, 808 was also doing the bitumen, so the two travelled together.

What trip would be complete without roadworks?

808 in convoy...

This numpty was all over the back of 808, swerving back and forth before flying past... apparently the speed limit is just a suggestion!

Onto the open road...

Damian's feet were wet from breakfast (walking on the grass), so he put his socks out to dry on the dash...   Thankfully they were fresh socks that morning!

Angus was driving to allow Damian to answer the phone as required...

Damian decided a power nap was in order...

Lots of wine trees out this way!

Naracoorte...  Long term blog readers would remember that Booger Mobile checked in to Naracoorte in 2011...

Another motorist who nearly caused a head-on while overtaking... Must be something in the water around here!

Ahhhh... a road with no other traffic...

Yet another power generating wind turbine doing nothing!

Even though they were on the bitumen, the boys stumbled on a fun stop... Damian had a go at the drinking iced water game...

Back on the road, it was important to watch out for very slow moving farm equipment!

These sheep had just run across the road from left to right... the boys decided to crawl past, getting a wave of thanks from the farmers.

South Australia also has train crossings in the middle of the highway!

Sunny downtown Keith...

This one is amusing to a select group of Damian's friends... the "Keith Institute"!

Lunch... the Keith Showgrounds...

A delicious lunch was put on by the Keith and District Hospital Auxiliary...

After lunch, it was on the road toward Renmark... the temperature was already around 38C...

Looks like the boys have reached the Wheat Belt...

Into Pinnaroo...

Tony stopped to top up his transmission fluid...

Turn left at Lovers Lane!

Damian grabbed a bag of mixed lollies to snack on... not much of a mix... six yellow lollies and a strawberry and cream!

Into sunny, downtown Loxton... temperature now 39C!

Through Berri...

Over the Murray River...

And checking in in Renmark...

The boys are staying in a room with a lovely view of the Murray River...

On-street parking though...

There's Retro Rock-It...

A big day of driving - nearly 500km even on the bitumen (the cars that did the route drove 550km)...  The boys arrived safe and sound in Renmark, and settled in for a few refreshing beverages before dinner.

  1. I love seeing all the pictures! It's like my own escape holiday.

    1. Hopefully we'll be back on the dirt tomorrow! Should be a cold front moving through tonight, and maybe a storm with it...

  2. Ah, Keith. Always remembered from our "Uluru and beyond" trip, for two reasons. 1. The Keith campground was the coldest place I have ever spent the night to date (and I have camped in canvas tents without floors, during Winter), and 2. We thought we were about to be murdered in our bed when someone tapped on the door of our camper in the middle of the night! Turned out to just be the Ranger, collecting our camping fee because the office had been closed earlier when we arrived.
