esCarpade Day 1 - Lismore to Gatton to Caloundra

After a poor night's sleep, Damian was up before the dawn and noted the frost on the windscreens of the cars parked downstairs...

Heading to breakfast was like a mini-esCarpade...

A detour under a low train bridge...

Over the river... twice!

And a deflated arch on arrival!

Parked ready for breakfast on Day 1...

Lismore Lion's Club put on a good spread at the Lismore South Bowling Club.

A marker inside shows how deep the flood was in 2022...

Even deeper than Damian is tall!

Noni the official photographer...

The first driver briefing of 2023!

The Camp Quality puppets with Retro Rock-It!

And with Damian...

Time to hit the road... through the giant inflatable arch!

And the driving for esCarpade 2023 was underway!

Onto the dirt...

Past old churches...

And equally old school buildings!

Plenty of narrow bridges...

Through downtown Kyogle!

A slightly taller train bridge...

And some water crossings!

And still taller train bridges!

Stopped at a red light on the way up the hill back to Qld!

And welcome back to Qld!

Lots of sweeping bitumen roads...

Damian driving while Hoges is a picture of concentration with his first navigating!

And another low-ish train bridge!

And more old buildings...

Moogerah Dam.

Back on the road...

Hogan Road!

And into the Gatton Bowls Club for lunch!

After lunch, it was time for Hoges to take the wheel, and Damian to navigate!

Car 99 was a little stuck...

It was a baptism of fire for Hoges...

Some of the tracks were both steep and rough!

Minecraft needed a bit of a hand...

Kicking up a bit of dust...

Climbing up through Crow's Nest... and an orange Kombi whizzed by!

Turn right at the police station!

What goes up...

Must come down!

Anyone wondering how the navigating happens... this is the boys' trip meter.  Top row is cumulative total (since last reset), bottom row is interim total (for the current instruction only), and the middle row shows the current speed, so the navigator can yell at the driver if necessary!

More nice Jacaranda trees in bloom...

Through Toogoolawah...

Through Kilcoy...

A pyramid at Mt Archer...

And a plane on a stick!

Turn left at the Woodford Hotel.

Past the Glasshouse Mountains...

Starting to get a bit dark...

And back onto bitumen for the cruise into Caloundra.

Checking in on sunset...

And heading back to their accommodation.

Dinner at the Caloundra RSL function centre...

Damian stuffing around...

Damian and Hoges!

Wayne Fleming was there to do caricatures, so the boys dutifully got a ticket and waited their turn...

The result was pretty good!  Damian looks a bit cheeky...  can't be right!

And so ended the first day of driving for esCarpade 2023!  Stay tuned for tomorrow's efforts as the boys head towards Bundaberg!
